Columbia Professors Weigh in on AI and the Workforce

The proliferation of AI applications in business and industry is on everyone’s mind. Two Columbia College Business School professors recently discussed AI’s impact on human dynamics in the workplace.

Todd Jick and Stephan Meier acknowledged the anxiety AI is causing among the rank-and-file—and in boardrooms, especially when it comes the way management reacts to employees’ fears about being replaced by AI. To prepare staff for change, management must first make sure that employees are trained in the new skills AI requires, the academics say. In the absence of training, the human inclination to resist change will lead to diminishing returns rather than prompting the innovations AI promises.
