Writing Prompt: Setting Goals for Business Communication Class

As a new semester begins, it’s always beneficial to set concrete and measurable goals for yourself. In this exercise, you will write an e-mail or a memo to your instructor that spells out your learning goals for this course.

Study your syllabus and textbook closely for the types of writing tasks you will be tackling to help you complete this task. Choose at least three types of messages that you want to perfect and explain why you selected them.  Your message should be about 250-300-words.

Help Students Take Ownership of Their Education

When students take responsibility for their own learning, they actively assume control over their academic success. This includes looking for opportunities, finding help when it’s needed, and achieving personal goals.

The start of a new semester with your business communication classes is a perfect time to help your students take charge of their education, set goals, and choose what they want to take away from a course.

Tips for Improving Your Syllabus

Have you ever seen the T-shirt with the phrase It’s in the syllabus? There is another version that reads It was in the SYLLABUS, it’s still in the SYLLABUS, it’s always in the SYLLABUS.

These T-shirts voice the frustration we have all experienced when our students ask about policies, due dates, or assignments that we presume we have clearly stated in the course syllabus. But perhaps we need to take another look at what information we include and how we, as the instructors of record, come off in this critical piece of writing.
